Nene courtship
Description: Hawaiian geese, or nēnē (Branta sandvicensis), courting at the beginning of the mating season in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Nēnē are native to the Hawaiian islands, and have become the world's rarest geese. Once abundant, their numbers were reduced to fewer than 50 individuals in the 1940s and 50s. Captive breeding programs and many other efforts at habitat restoration and predator management have helped populations recover somewhat. Still, introduced predators like cats and mongooses, invasive vegetation, livestock grazing, cars, and golf balls all continue to threaten the nēnē.
Location: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawai'i
